Today, I'm thrilled to take you on a virtual journey through my recent experience at the Glenturret Distillery, home to Scotland's oldest working stills. Nestled in the heart of Perthshire, Glenturret's surroundings are straight out of a postcard. Picture lush greenery, charming stone buildings, and the gentle gurgle of the Turret Burn – it's basically whisky heaven.
Our guide, Ewan, was an absolute gem, brimming with knowledge and enthusiasm. He led us through the distillery's fascinating history, from its humble beginnings in 1775 as Scotland's oldest working distillery to its recent acquisition by the luxury goods powerhouse, Lalique Group. The new branding and packaging are simply stunning, a testament to Lalique's commitment to elegance and craftsmanship. But it's not just about aesthetics; the distillery is also undergoing a renaissance in production, with a focus on small-batch, hand-crafted whiskies that truly showcase the Glenturret terroir.
One of the most exciting additions under the new ownership is the on-site Michelin-starred restaurant, The Glenturret Lalique. While I didn't get to experience it this time, it's definitely on my bucket list for my next visit. Imagine indulging in a gastronomic feast while overlooking the very stills that produced the whisky in your glass - talk about a multi-sensory experience!
Now, for the highlight of the tour - the blending experience! This hands-on session allowed me to step into the shoes of a master distiller, carefully nosing and tasting different whisky samples to create my own unique blend. It was a fascinating process, putting all our senses to the test. With each drop, we experimented, adjusted, and fine-tuned our creations until we achieved the perfect balance. The result? A personalised 100ml bottle of whisky to take home, a tangible reminder of our unforgettable experience at Glenturret.
If you're planning a trip to Scotland, be sure to add The Glenturret Distillery to your itinerary. It's a perfect blend of history, craftsmanship, innovation, and indulgence. From the stunning surroundings to the knowledgeable guides, the Michelin-starred dining to the hands-on blending experience, Glenturret offers a truly unforgettable journey into the heart of whisky.
