Sebastian Henderson built the St. Magdalene distillery, originally called Linlithgow, in the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow in the mid-18th century. The distillery was built on land which housed the St. Magdalene’s Cross Convent, hence the current name, and rented from the Countess of Dalhousie. Its location was between the Union Canal, where it drew its cooling water, and the railway line.
The distillery operated throughout the 20th century until it was permanently closed in 1983. The site was converted into residential housing in the early 1990s, although the malting barn and kiln remain.
